Dr James Newman is Senior Lecturer in Media Communications and Cultural Studies at Bath Spa University where he teaches courses on videogames and digital media. In 1998, James completed the UK's first PhD examining the social and cultural aspects of videogames. Since then, he has written numerous books and articles on videogames and gaming cultures. His most recent books include Videogames (Routledge 2004); Teaching Videogames (BFI publishing 2006); 100 Videogames (BFI 2007) and Difficult Questions About Videogames which he co-edited with Iain Simons in 2004. James is currently putting the finishing touches to a book for Routledge called Playing with Videogames which explores the cultures of fandom surrounding and supporting gaming culture and which documents the exciting and unexpected things players do with - and because of - videogames.
